Golu Dolls:
Golu (or Kolu) in Tamil refers to the exhibition and decoration of dolls and figurines of human beings and idols of gods and goddesses during Navaratri. Each displayed item in a Golu show is called Golu doll or equivalent. They are typically placed in an odd number of pages (tiers) to narrate a story.
These clay dolls represent gods, goddesses, people, animals, and things and symbolize the worship of divinity in all animate and inanimate objects. Beautifully arranged in explicit structures, the golu dolls occupy the place of pride in Hindu homes. The Thanjavur tilting doll is the Gundu Chatti Bommai (Round Pot Doll), Raja-Rani Bommai. The law of equilibrium determines the course of its movements. Due to this, the doll does not topple over, but only its head bobs, offering the illusion of being animated and alive.
The Thanjavur doll is an orthodox Indian bobblehead or roly-poly toy of terracotta material. These dolls are created by heating a mix of tapioca flour and copper sulfate powder till it gets a semi-solid consistency. It takes roughly ten days to complete a doll. The toy is typically hollow with a weight inside the bottom hemisphere.
Golu exhibits range from house to house, based on hierarchy, magnificence, size, and most importantly, the looks and arrangement of the dolls. Modern golu displays on a site (inside homes) easy access, comfortable viewing, and gathering of guests while simultaneously being close to the kitchen and the prayer room of the multiple journeys to be made between the three zones during the festival. Additionally, it is to be oriented east-west and never towards the south. Despite these constraints, it is made sure that the golu site does not drastically affect the functioning of the household. Street hawkers by the roadside, stalls in tourist places, and the emporiums of state handicrafts trade these culturally significant dolls shows that these dolls are in the excessive collection but with inadequate demand.
